Heute ist der Geburtstag von Flares-Schlagzeuger Christian S. Genau deshalb hat Barhill Records auch heute die EP „Pocket Escapisms“ seines Soloprojekts Bishop’s Trace weltweit digital wiederveröffentlicht.
Ab und zu erreicht man einen Zeitpunkt, an dem man nicht mehr anders kann, als etwas zu Papier zu bringen. Anfang 2012 war auch Christian S., Drummer der Saarbrücker Postrock-Band Flares, an solch einem Punkt angekommen. Schon vor der Veröffentlichung der zweiten Flares EP („Kingdom Come“, 16.02.2012) feilte er in seiner Studentenbude an eigenen Songs, die im Kontext seiner Band nicht funktioniert hätten. Schließlich waren es eher einfache, persönliche Akustikgitarrenstücke mit Gesang, an deren Entstehung die heute noch vorhandene Begeisterung für die Musik von Jeff Buckley nicht ganz unschuldig war. Doch wohin damit?
Zunächst mal den Band-Buddies zeigen, zu denen nach wie vor Keyboarder Mike Balzer gehört. Dieser erklärte sich als damals angehender Toningenieur bereit, bei der Verwirklichung der Songs die Regie zu übernehmen. Also schlugen sich die Beiden im Studio die Nächte um die Ohren, wobei die dabei freigewordene Experimentierfreude zur Folge hatte, dass es nicht bei reinen Akustikgitarrensongs bleiben konnte. Schlussendlich fanden auch E-Gitarre, Bass, Piano und Schlagzeug ihren Weg auf die EP „Pocket Escapisms“, allesamt eingespielt von Multi-Instrumentalist Christian.
Auch Mike als Produzent sowie Flares-Gitarrist Christian Detzler haben mit Programming und Gitarren-Overdubs Spuren auf der EP hinterlassen. Das Resultat sind fünf Songs irgendwo zwischen The Smashing Pumpkins, Elliott Smith, Aereogramme und frühen Portishead.
Es fanden damals lediglich zwei Live-Auftritte statt, bei denen Chris auch von den Beiden unterstützt wurde, bevor der Fokus der drei Musiker sich wieder in Richtung des ersten Flares-Albums „Solar Empire“ (23.05.2014) verschoben hatte.
„Pocket Escapisms“ wurde bereits am 12.06.2012 in Kleinstauflage auf dem Saarbrücker DIY-Label Puzzle Records auf Tape und CD veröffentlicht, und erblickte nun dank Barhill Records als digitale Wiederveröffentlichung erneut das Licht der Welt. Zu diesem Anlass hat Mike die Songs remastered.

Today marks the birthday of Flares-drummer Christian S. Therefore, Barhill Records has digitally re-released the EP „Pocket Escapisms“ of his solo project Bishop’s Trace.
Every once in a while, musicians will reach the point where they need to get their ideas out there on paper. This is what happened to Christian S., drummer of the Saarbrücken post-rock band Flares, in early 2012. Even before the release of the Flares’ second EP „Kingdom Come“ on February 16, 2012, he began writing his own songs in his student dig – songs which would not have worked in the context of his band. After all, these were rather sparse, intimate acoustic guitar pieces with vocals, clearly influenced by Christian‘s longstanding admiration for the music of Jeff Buckley. A great set of songs – but how to continue from there?
First Christian showed them to his band, including keyboardist Mike Balzer, a then prospective sound engineer, who immediately agreed to take charge of producing the songs. The two spent many sleepless nights at the studio, kicking off a flow of creative energy which resulted in a departure from the original, purely acoustic guitar-driven sound. That‘s why the EP „Pocket Escapisms“ ultimately ended up being recorded with electric guitar, bass, piano and drums – all played by multi-instrumentalist Christian.
But Mike, the producer, and Flares guitarist Christian Detzler also contributed to the EP‘s sound with characteristic programming and guitar overdubs. The result is a set of five songs, sounding somewhere between Smashing Pumpkins, Elliott Smith, Aereogramme and early Portishead.
Chris performed the songs only twice on live occasions with the support of his two bandmates, before the Flares shifted their focus back to their first album „Solar Empire“, which was released on May 23, 2014.
„Pocket Escapisms“ first released on June 12, 2012 as limited cassette and CD editions on the Saarbrücken-based DIY label Puzzle Records, has been reissued by Barhill Records as a digital re-release, newly remastered by its original producer Mike.
